Insulation

Attic Insulation in Jersey City

Heat rises, and in a poorly insulated attic it keeps right on going through the roof. Bringing your attic up to current recommended levels is one of the best-paying home improvements in our climate.

Top Up to Today's R-Values for Jersey City homes

Hudson County winters are cold and damp, and summers push attic temperatures well past 120 degrees. Many Jersey City homes still have the thin layer of insulation they were built with, or old material that has compressed, shifted or been disturbed by contractors and critters over the years.

We measure the depth and condition of what's there, seal major air leaks first, protect recessed lights and keep soffit vents open with baffles. Then we add insulation to reach the R-value the U.S. Department of Energy recommends for our region, typically in the R-38 to R-60 range, and leave a depth marker so you can see what you paid for.

Signs it's time to call

  • You can see the tops of ceiling joists in the attic
  • Upstairs rooms are hot in summer and cold in winter
  • Ice dams or uneven snow melt on the roof
  • High heating bills compared with similar homes
  • Insulation that is thin, matted or patchy

How we do it

  1. Attic inspection with depth measurements and photos
  2. Major air leaks sealed and recessed lights protected
  3. Baffles installed to keep soffit ventilation open
  4. Insulation installed to the target R-value
  5. Depth markers set and attic hatch insulated and weatherstripped

What you get

Lower energy bills

Less heat escapes in winter and less enters in summer.

Even temperatures

Upstairs rooms stay closer to the thermostat setting.

Quieter home

Thicker insulation also dampens outside noise.

Many Jersey City customers pair attic insulation with blown-in insulation or attic air sealing, so both can be handled in one visit.

FAQ

Attic Insulation questions, answered

How much attic insulation do I need?

For our climate zone, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends attic insulation in roughly the R-38 to R-60 range, which is usually 12 to 20 inches depending on the material. We measure what you have and calculate how much to add.

Can you add insulation on top of what's already there?

Usually yes, as long as the existing insulation is dry, clean and free of pests or mold. If it's contaminated, we'll recommend removing it first.

Are there rebates for insulation in New Jersey?

New Jersey utilities and state programs have offered energy-efficiency incentives for insulation and air sealing. Programs change, so we'll help you check what's currently available before you sign.

Will insulating my attic cause moisture problems?

Not when ventilation is maintained and air leaks are sealed first. That's why we install baffles at the eaves and seal penetrations before adding insulation.
